The Ekurhuleni region is sometimes called the home of football education in South Africa. The team is passionate about building coaching capacity and developing talent. The region has 704 schools and 15 LFA’s in 9 towns including areas like Tembisa, Springs, Alberton, Edenvale, Benoni. Boksburg, Germiston, Brakpan. With regional population of 5 million, the SAFA team aims to connect with and provide support and service to all who love, play and coach football across the region.
The SAFA Ekurhuleni team is offering this officially recognized SAFA Ekurhuleni’s coaching the Grassroots Coach program to ensure there are good Coaches for the 150 000 youth in the region who play football. Developing children’s fitness, football skills and mental resilience through good coaching has tremendous positive effects on the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of the players, their families and the community around them. If the region is to field a professional team in the future this programme will have to supply a stream of players with the solid foundations that will allow them to go on to compete at the highest professional levels
School Football is critical to the development of Football in South Africa
Football is South Africa's most popular sport, and the only sporting code that has participants in all municipal wards. The goal for SAFA is that 10% of the South African population must play football.
SAFA is the national Administrative governing body that controls football in South Africa. SAFA has developed the Turnaround Strategy Plan 2025 - 2030 for the Development, Administration, Governance & Coordination of football. The vision is founded on the National Development Plan 2030 and the National Sport & Recreation plan 2030

Football is important for many reasons, including physical and mental health, social interaction, and community building. Team sports like football develop mental and physical resilience.
They teach important life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and time management. As players collaborate to achieve a common goal, they learn to value individual strengths while acknowledging the significance of collective effort
SAFA qualified Grassroots Coaches have completed training learning how to keep children safe and provide practice sessions that are fun and grow fitness, football skills and emotional and mental resilience.
They have been assessed by expert Instructors to ensure their knowledge of football and coaching skills are up to the standards expected by SAFA. They understand that we will never become a power in international football unless our players develop a love of the game and rock-solid foundations early on.
There are many courses available that are not affiliated with football governing bodies. A key aspect of becoming a coach is getting a formal coaching qualification awarded by the National Football governing body SAFA . Having a formal qualification ensures that your coach :
- Has been assessed by SAFA accredited instructors
- Has a good understanding of how to coach football,
- Has learned how to deliver the age-appropriate needs of your child,
- Knows how to plan and deliver a coaching session to develop important fundamental skills required for your child to progress in football.
